Funeral Procedures in Turkey
7/16/20241 min read
The funeral procedures carried out in Turkey and the procedures carried out for funeral transportation abroad differ from each other in certain aspects. The burial procedures of the deceased person vary depending on where and how they died. If the deceased person died at home due to natural causes, the “Death Certificate” and “Burial Permit Certificate” are obtained by applying to the health affairs of the municipality where the death took place with the original identity card of the deceased person or a sample of the identity register or residence card/passport information. After the death certificate is obtained, the relevant health institution notifies the Population Directorate of the death within a maximum of 10 days. Together with the burial permit, an application is made to the nearest funeral directorate of the relevant municipality. A grave space is allocated from the cemetery area determined by the funeral directorate.
If you want to choose from the empty areas, you can apply to the cemetery directorate and buy a grave space after paying the “funeral grave space fee”. If there is a previously purchased empty grave space, the grave space can also be used by submitting the original document “Grave Space Utilization Certificate” to the Funeral Affairs Chief at the time of burial. After the allocation of the grave space, the body of the deceased person is taken from the morgue and taken to the funeral washing place for washing. At the funeral washing place, the deceased foreigner is cleaned, washed, and shrouded. The burial process is carried out with the ritual of the religion of the deceased foreigner. Religious rituals can also be performed for funerals to be transferred abroad.
